Out The Window Of A Plane

For two days this week I had an event photography gig I was working in Arizona – this shot was taken looking out the window of a Southwest Airlines flight from Kansas City to Phoenix this past Wednesday. Of course, the distortion from the fisheye lens makes the Earth appear round, which it is of […]

Union Station and Liberty Memorial in One Shot

This is the third of my five shots from The Link last Saturday near Union Station at Crown Center. With this fisheye lens angle through the windows we can see both Union Station at the right, some flags, and Liberty Memorial up the hill, and a tunnel with people thrown in for good measure.

Behind Muriel Kauffman Theatre at the Kauffman Center

I don’t yet fully understand all the technologies at play inside the Kauffman Center. I’ve had them shown to me on a couple of occasions and I wish I could recite what and why this large edifice is hanging down from the ceiling behind the stage of the Muriel Kauffman Theatre but the proper response […]

Crown Center at Dusk from The Link

My second of five shots on Saturday night inside The Link skywalk over Pershing and Main downtown. Here you can see my bodily legs and tripod legs to the lower right in the reflections.

Valentine’s Day Red Light Camera Protest

On Monday afternoon there was a protest as part of the “Nationwide Red Light Camera Protest” on Valentine’s Day at Southwest Trafficway and 39th Street in Kansas City, in protest of the city’s traffic cameras installed at that location and several others throughout the city.

Union Station at Sunset from The Link

I returned again to The Link skywalk over Pershing and Main at Crown Center on Saturday evening for more photos. I collected five total I want to post, this one being the first. Two were with my standard wide angle lens, as this photo above is, and three more were taken with my fisheye lens. […]

Eighth & Broadway, Downtown KCMO

At 8th and Broadway in downtown KC lies the old “Garment District” area. I’ve always really liked coming back to this area every now and then for further photos. Here we have the entryway area for the building on the southeast corner of 8th and Broadway – It’s the type of thing you’d never notice […]

Liberty Memorial and Kansas City Skyscrapers

Last Friday evening during the blizzard recovery I was wanting some skyline shots with the snow. After trudging through the mess that was Liberty Memorial I realized that vantage point would be impossible, so I went near part of the Federal Reserve driveway and went wild with the telephoto. From left to right is the […]

The Garment District, Frozen Over

On Saturday evening over by the Red Dragon Chinese Restaurant in the old Garment District around 8th and Broadway. I was right by the remainder of the Folger’s Coffee Plant in taking this shot. It’s the frigidness we’re stuck in until about tomorrow as over the next several days it’s supposed to warm up and […]

The Grand Lobby in the Kauffman Center – under construction

Two weeks ago I had the chance again to go inside the Kauffman Center construction site for photography. For this post I’m highlighting my three fisheye-lens shots taken from the top level off the edge as close to the center as I could get. The Lobby will be called the Brandmeyer Great Hall. The Kauffman […]

Tilted and Colorful Downtown KCMO

This was one of my three photos I came away with (Saturday’s post being another) from my time over near the Federal Reserve building with my telephoto lens trying to capture both parts of the Liberty Memorial grounds along with the skyline after the snowfall last week. Photo taken Friday, Feb. 4 a little after […]

Protest In Kansas City of Egypt’s Mubarak Regime

On Sunday afternoon (Feb. 6, 2011) from 2 to 4 pm another large rally was held at Mill Creek Park on the Plaza for Egypt and against the Hosni Mubarak presidency currently under protest back in Egypt. This demonstration in Kansas City is the second in one week as the political situation in Egypt worsens. […]

KCMO Skyline and Liberty Memorial Grounds With Snow

I was intending for shots from Liberty Memorial’s overlook area of the downtown skyline, but it was closed off due to the mess the blizzard left behind. After I was leaving I looked left out my window and noticed from around in front of the driveway of the Federal Reserve building you have this view […]

Kauffman Center Exterior Up Close

From my visit to the Kauffman Center’s construction site last Friday, here are a couple external up-close shots. From this angle the Grand Lobby is the prominent feature being seen of the new building.

Kauffman Center Interior Construction Progress

Last Friday I had the chance again to go on-site and inside the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts for further construction and progress photography. For this post I’m showing the two venues in the building, the Muriel Kauffman Theatre and Helzberg Hall. In the instance of both photos I stood as far to the […]

Demonstration for Egypt on Saturday

A large group of demonstrators came to the Nichols Fountain area on the Plaza in Kansas City, Missouri on Saturday afternoon at 4 PM to demonstrate against the Hosni Mubarak regime in Egypt currently being protested in various forms back in Egypt itself. I am informed many of the group were Egyptian Americans, with good […]

Norman School in KCMO School District on the market

This is the old Norman School, I assume a leftover from the Kansas City Missouri School District. The building is listed by a realtor. Whenever I’m zipping between my midtown home and downtown I often notice this building to the right as you’re going north on Southwest Trafficway about midway through 39th to 31st.

Kauffman Center In The Snow

It’s winter and that means it’s the worst time of the year in Kansas City. Nevertheless I had to get out and take a photo of the Kauffman Center with the snow. I ended up going back to a familiar spot, at the Convention Center Ballroom sculpture area where I took this photo back in […]

31st and Troost MAX Bus Public Art

A few weeks ago I spotted new public art installations at at least two locations along the new Troost MAX bus line that started running at the new year. This one, completed, is located at 31st and Troost, same site as the anticipated Troost Festival every year in May and across the street from Operation […]

West Bottoms Railroad

This is the kind of thing you could call street furniture. It makes a street more interesting and it serves a use, in this case keeping people from being ruined by passing trains. And it looks better than having nothing there at all. Two Sundays ago I was in the West Bottoms and took this […]

Twelfth Street Bridge Imposing

Last Sunday in the West Bottoms I thought it would be fun to try and see about bringing out the 12th Street Bridge meanness while a train passed beneath.

Sunset In The Link, Pt 3

This is the first of the three photos I bothered editing from inside The Link on Sunday evening, and the final one I’m posting for now. The last time I had been inside The Link for photos back in October, this section where the main part of downtown is viewable was closed off due to […]

Sunset In The Link Pt. 2

From my Sunday evening around sunset inside The Link tunnel between Crown Center and Union Station at Pershing and Main. This shot was rather unintentional, as after I finished taking tomorrow’s photo posting, I went on my way to get situated to take the one I posted back on Tuesday. But in between those two […]

Snowed Over Plaza

After leaving work on the southern part of the Plaza on Monday afternoon I trudged vehicularly in the snow past the pedestrian bridge with all the national flags of Kansas City’s designated sister cities. When I got home I eventually grabbed the camera bag and went back just for a type of shot like how […]

Sunset in The Link Pt. 1

On Sunday I had a good time in the afternoon and evening getting some new shots just for fun. I started in the West Bottoms and ended inside The Link, the windowed above-street tunnel between Union Station and Crown Center. I’m actually posting my photos in backwards order, as this one was my final for […]

Holy Name Church Pre-Demolition

We have the Holy Name Church at 23rd and Benton Boulevard on Kansas City’s east side, now facing imminent demolition with the owner of the old church building telling a judge he will indeed foot the bill for its demolition instead of the city. Construction on this old church began in 1911 but wasn’t completed […]

Plaza Lights and High Rise Residential

While getting shots Sunday evening I nabbed this view from the top of the garage on 47th looking southeast toward the Plaza Medical Building in the lower foreground and the old high-rise condo and apartment buildings along Ward Parkway towering behind.

December at the Board of Trade

While one of my coworkers at the Board of Trade neared her due date, I took a couple photos of her, highly pregnant in the staff jacket on the trading floor, and also had a bit of extra time for some random photos on the trading floor a little bit before Christmas. There’s not much […]

Plaza Lights on 47th

Something from Sunday evening, January 2nd along 47th on the Plaza. I haven’t done any Plaza lights photography this season at all, or much other photography for that matter – due to a lot of things I’ve been having to take care of lately. But I’d been meaning to try and get a view from […]

Under a Bush in Stafford Kansas

Back from a Christmas-time trip to central Kansas. This was under a bush at the Stafford Kansas cemetery the morning after Christmas. Some of my family members continue on the craziness spiral and some of the towns keep disintegrating in slow, steady ways. 9:45 AM, Sunday Dec. 26, 2010.

West Bottoms Sunrise – No Photo Show

Something almost random I took at the 12th Street Bridge in the West Bottoms at sunrise back in October that I never got around to posting. There’s some long-exposure train motion in there which was why I ran over to compose as quickly as I could and try and get a shot. NO PHOTO SHOW […]

Tilted and incomplete Kauffman Center

I’ve had a paying client or two here and there request up-to-date images of the Kauffman Center’s current progress, which is why I have so many shots of the grand structure rising as of late, this being yet another. I don’t know about you but I’m in the mood for another good old fashioned protest […]

Symmetrical Theme

A few times before I’ve had a good time making some symmetrical architectural doo-dads with the computer. For this one I used a photo I took a few days ago nearing the evening as workers were putting some touches on the Kauffman Center’s ongoing construction. And the photo it derived from, edited and made B&W […]

Picketing of Jerusalem Cafe

On Friday I saw word of a picketing over allegations of labor violations at a local restaurant just a short trip away from my apartment in midtown Kansas City. Credit to articles on  Tony’s Kansas City and The Pitch. The Pitch article mentions a civil suit filed against current and former owners of the restaurant […]

Photo Show Put Off One Week

Photo is from something I was gathering a week or two back in some work detailing the Kauffman Center construction. Due to someone’s scheduling foul-up the photo show I’ve been posting about is put back to Friday, December 10 instead of this coming Friday. So, don’t come this Friday. (facebook)

Commercial Work at the Nelson

Earlier in November I worked on a commercial photo shoot at dusk at the Nelson Atkins Museum for some produced shots featuring the Bloch Building addition at the Nelson Atkins Museum for tourism uses. REMINDER – Gallery show of my photography at The Hook Gallery in Westport this coming Friday evening has been moved to Friday […]

Working Hard on the Kauffman Center

Monday afternoon I was scouting good angles for some shots of the front of the Kauffman Center. I took this telephoto close-up shot around 4:15 in the afternoon (Mon. Nov. 29, 2010), but the light was so bland and uninteresting I figured the only thing I’ll be doing with the shots I did take will […]

Kauffman Center at Sunset

The caption is right. That’s how I live life.

National Opt Out Day in Kansas City

The busiest travel day of the year was designated National Opt Out Day at airports around the US, encouraging travelers to forego going through the full body scanning devices implemented by the TSA. The body scanning devices reveal in full detail all of one’s bodily nooks and crannies, but unfortunately the only other alternative in […]

Cityscape at Sunset

In my travels to the top of the City Hall garage for photography recently, this was one of the colorful sights on Saturday night – 5:30 pm Nov. 20, downtown Kansas City, MO. Reminder: Photography show at The Hook Gallery in Westport on Friday December 3rd. Here are the Facebook and Yelp listings.

City Hall Garage Looking West at Dusk

A quick project I’m working on briefly has taken me back to the top of the city hall garage for a couple of recent sunsets. This shot of the old Power and Light Building with the H&R Block Headquarters and the Bartle Hall pylons (technically called Skystations I believe) was something additional I noticed while […]

Nelson Atkins Fall Foliage

Photo at the Nelson Atkins Museum in Kansas City on Tuesday, Nov. 16. Two or three times I’ve ambled around trying to get one or two decent fall shots this year, finally settling on this one. As I’ve noted, I’ll be having a gallery show and sale coming up Friday, December 3rd, and my gallery […]

Friday Dec. 3 Photography Show

Two things for this post: Announcing a photography art show on the evening of Friday December 3rd at The Hook Gallery and Framing event space (map, website) in the Westport “Horseshoe” near Californos and Murray’s. We’re replenishing the outdated stock of my wares therein and will be showing some Plaza Lights photos in the spirit of […]

Dream Act Galvanizing

There was a meeting for the Dream Act and supporters Sunday evening at St. Mark’s Methodist Church in Overland Park. I photographed a couple Dream Act rallies on the Plaza this past summer and have kept in touch with a few of the activists via Facebook. The Dream Act is legislation to provide a path […]

Elmwood Cemetery Sunset Scene

Another from Elmwood Cemetery taken a week ago right around sunset with the fall foliage. Some of the streetscape of Truman Road is visible beyond the cemetery fence.

Kauffman Center Skeletal

One of my shots from the Kauffman Center’s Grand Lobby, seen from the top level outside of the under-construction Muriel Kauffman Theatre. This is the skeletal frame at the south of the building coming together to show a pattern here for me while inside for construction progress photos about three weeks ago.

Downtown Skywalk Pt. 4

Ending my set of pics I took Saturday night from the downtown skywalk. Getting situated to show angles and lines in this kind of way is one of the most fun things in photography for me. The US Bank building is through the windows at the left, with the south exterior glass of the skywalk visible […]

Downtown Skywalk Pt. 3

Part three of four of my set of shots from Saturday night, with a view out the skywalk at 12th and Wyandotte. The US Bank Building is on the left, with a terminal view looking east along 12th Street.

Downtown Skywalk Pt. 2

From the skywalk between the Muehlebach and Marriott Hotels at 12th and Wyandotte, looking southward we have a view of the Allis Plaza park (or whatever it’s called) and some reflections in the glass. I’m kind of a sucker for shots with a lot of “visual chaos.”

Downtown Skywalk Pt. 1

I was out Saturday night and happened to have my photo gear with me. When I drove under the skywalk between the Muehlebach and Marriott Hotels, I noticed it had special lights running intermittently on the edges. Since I took a daytime photo in the same place back in September, I kept thinking it would […]
